My hair got lifted
once the balloons
got attached,
and the helium
took it high
up off my shoulders
in the smoky night
den of the Wreck Room.
And i felt like a
clown in the
circus tent
who spellbinds
the children
and their
slightly resistant
elders,
but once the
austin music
began and the
mood became
buoyant it was
quite instinctual
to dance and
turn and slowly
dive to the floor,
sending my hair-
tied balloons
racing up
towards the
ceiling,
causing sudsy
smiles, as people
grinned at me
between their
gulps of beer,
showing me that
the so-called
antics and tricks
that bring laughter
to town,
is not the work of a fool,
but is probably
actually
the mission and duty
of the kindest of kindly gods.
